Jacob Steiner violin

The German/Tyrol area was famous for instrument making as early as 1600. Jacob Steiner, Absam in the Tyrol, was the most prominent of these, born in 1621. Some influence from Nicolo Amati is seen in his work. The most prominent feature of his violins is the high degree of arching. This arching is said to yield a most attractive and harmonious although not powerful tone. High quality varnishes of pale hue are found frequently.
