The northern Italian city of Brecia boasts instrument makers from the middle of the fifteenth century. Gasparo da Salo was a Brecian instrument maker, born in 1540 and working just after Andrea Amati, according to present research. His early works included viols, tenor violas, and many plucked instruments. His violas and violin designs showed “viol” influence. Both single purflings and double purflings were used. Dark orange and brown varnishes prevailed.
